Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Do I have to wear eye protection?
    • Yes, it is required by law to wear eye protection.   Your eyelids are not thick enough to protect your eyes from UV damage.   A Total Tan provides disposable or personal eye protection.
  • How do I build a base tan?
    • Everyone’s skin type varies…..the average person takes 7-10 tans to build a base tan.   Moderation is the key…….gradually increase your time in small increments (about 1-2 minutes).   Tanning lotions also will help keep your skin hydrated.   (Moist skin absorbs light, while dry skin reflects lights)
  • How old do you have to be to tan at a tanning salon?
    • The State Board of Health requires anyone under the age of 18 to have a parent or legal guardian present and must give consent to the tanning salon.
    • Anyone under the age of 16 must have a parent or legal guardian present at each visit to the tanning salon.
  • Should I use a tanning lotion?
    • We suggest using tanning lotions before and after tanning.   Tanning lotions help you tan 40% faster and prolong your tan up to 40% longer.   Using tanning lotions help keep your skin hydrated and looking healthy.
  • If I don’t tan in the sun, will I be able to tan in a tanning bed?
    • No, you will not be able to tan in a tanning bed if you don’t tan in the sun.   However, we do suggest our UV free Mystic Tan.   (please check locations for Mystic Tan availability)
  • Do I need to make an appointment?
    • No, all of our salons have anywhere from 33 to 58 tanning units, therefore no appointment is needed.
  • Can I tan if I am pregnant?
    • We recommend consulting with your physician before proceeding with any of our tanning units.
  • How often do you change your tanning bulbs?
    • We change our tanning bulbs once they reach 50% of the maximum capacity.   Changing our bulbs this soon will maximize the best results for your best tan.
